Parallel processing of complex movement in the brain
Project summary
To control movement, neurons in the brain must send electrical signals to each another and finally to the correct muscles. Neurons must be electrically active and connected to each other in appropriate ways to function properly. We understand the cerebellum is a critical part of the brain for movement because damage to this part of the brain causes uncoordinated movement. Yet, surprisingly, the function of the cerebellum is not well understood. This proposal aims to show that it behaves like a supercomputer, with many small parts working together simultaneously to control complex movements in a smooth and accurate way.
